In the morning you will take a New Orleans City tour that includes areas affected by Hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Katrina was one of the most devastating storms to strike the Gulf Coast in decades. Its impact on the region was nothing more than devastating. Much of New Orleans is situated at or below sea level making our levees mperative during such a storm. On August 29, 2005, those levees failed...and left much of the city of New Orleans in ruins. As part of this tour, you will be taken to severely devastated sites around the city, and see the progress being made in rebuilding this great city. You will also learn how Louisiana's disappearing wetlands are negatively impacting New Orleans' hurricane protection system and what must be done to restore this vital barrier to protect us against storm surge. Return to hotel. Lunch In the afternoon you will be picked up at your hotel to go on an excursion to tour the Oak Valley Plantation. Stand on the balcony of this greek-style home to experience the breath-taking view of the levy-lined Mississippi river hundreds of yards from the front door canopied by 28 massive oak trees more than 300 years old. The Plantation encompasses 25 acres of land owned by the non-profit Oak Alley Plantation Foundation. 75 of the surrounding acres are residential homes, 600 acres are leased for sugar cane cultivation and 450 acres are still virgin woodlands. Jacques Telesphore Roman, a wealthy Creole sugar planter, built the present-day mansion in 1839. If the beautiful grounds aren't enticing enough, perhaps a ghost story or two will draw you to Oak Alley. There have been numerous ghost sightings by employees, and more than one person has heard the sound of a horse drawn carriage making its way up the stone walk. After the tour you are dropped off at your hotel. Evening at leisure. Dinner on your own.
Friday October 30st - Breakfast at Hotel.
At 9:30 AM Depart for your New Orleans Voodoo Cemetery Tour which is a popular daytime adventure into the legendary St. Louis Cemetery #1, New Orleans' oldest City of the Dead. We'll explore the cemetery and visit the tomb of Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau. Step back in time with this historically accurate and educational tour. For this tour you will have to meet at the tour start location at Rev. Zombie's Voodoo Shop, 723 St. Peter St. (between Bourbon & Royal streets). After the tour the afternoon is at your leisure. Saturday, October 31st - Breakfast at Hotel. Halloween! Morning/early afternoon at leisure to explore New Orleans. Visit The French Quarter, The Garden District and more!
